Crete is the largest island of Greece and its territory is divided into four large regions. They are located one after the other from east to west: Lassithi, Heraklion, Rethymno and Chania. Each region of Crete has a variety of hotels, villas and apartments – and sightseeings, of course.
Why is it important to choose the right area?
Crete is so big that you don’t feel like you are on an island. It’s like being on the mainland. It also means that the distances between attractions can be very, very long. For example, driving 250 kilometers one way to visit a beautiful beach can be a real thing (when the choice of resort does not exactly match the desire to visit certain places on the island), so you can imagine how long it can take, how early you will have to get up, and how late you will return. That’s why it’s so important to choose the right place for your vacation and plan your excursion program in Crete in advance. And we are here to help you!
First of all, let’s look at the schematic map of our island. Here you can see all four regions:

Lassithi Region
The most popular cities in this region: Agios Nikolaos (region’s capital), Ammoudara, Elounda, Ierapetra, Istron, Plaka, Sitia.
This area is home to a wide variety of attractions, from beautiful towns and monasteries, mountain ranges and caves to gorgeous beaches and palm groves. Let’s note some of them:
- Agios Nikolaos. Charming coastal town features a picturesque harbor, lively waterfront promenade, and attractions such as the Lake Voulismeni, a small lagoon connected to the sea by a narrow channel;
- Spinalonga Island. Once a leper colony, Spinalonga Island is now a popular tourist destination known for its well-preserved Venetian fortress and dramatic history;
- Cave of Zeus (Dikteon Cave). According to Greek mythology, this cave, located on the slopes of Mount Psiloritis, is where Zeus was born. It’s a fascinating archaeological site and natural wonder;
- Lassithi Plateau. Known for its picturesque villages and fertile land, the Lassithi Plateau offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and is dotted with traditional windmills and white-sailed wind pumps;
- Toplou Monastery. Situated in between the town of Sitia and Vai Beach, Toplou Monastery is a striking example of architecture (and history!). It houses a fascinating museum and is surrounded by scenic vineyards and olive groves;

All four regions of our island are rich in attractions and interesting places, so we have a different excursion programs and different trips for each of them.
Which area of Crete should I choose for my vacation?
We organize group excursions from all areas of the island to some of the most popular sights; some group excursions are individual for each area and are not accessible from other areas of the island (but we can organize almost any route as a private tour with our individual guides).
The cost of excursions in Crete, as well as their schedules (departure and return times, travel time, stops, etc.) and sometimes prices can also vary. For example, for those who want to go to the lagoon of Balos (Western Crete) from Malia (east of Heraklion region), the trip will take at least an hour longer than for those who want to go to Balos from Agia Pelagia (west of Heraklion region). Both resorts are located in the Heraklion region – just in different parts of it and 55 kilometers between them. Tourists from Malia will travel a significantly longer distance, while those from Agia Pelagia will have a shorter trip. The opposite example is if they want to go to the island of Spinalonga (Eastern Crete): from Agia Pelagia they will need one hour more than those tourists who will make the same trip from Malia – all because of the difference in distance.
The main idea is to choose the area for your vacation in Crete that has the maximum number of attractions that you would like to visit
Alternatively, you can choose one of the neighboring areas.
If your sightseeing list consists mainly of Balos Lagoon, Elafonisi Beach and Chania Town, it is better to stay in the Chania or Rethymno area. The central and western part of the Heraklion region will also do.
If you are not interested in these places, but want to visit the palm-fringed beach of Vai and the monastery of Toplou, then you should choose Lassithi or Heraklion region.
For those who want to see a lot of sights in Crete, the central area is the best option
If you want to see as many sights as possible in Crete, it is a good idea to choose the central area (the towns on the north coast of the Heraklion region). This will put you in the heart of the island and give you access to all the excursions to the east, south and west of Crete – not to mention as many cruises as possible from Crete to Santorini for one, two or more days. Each trip will not require too much time, getting up very early or returning after midnight.
Meeting at the tour bus
Each area of the island is thousands of square kilometers and not all of them belong to the tourist area. In the most popular tourist areas of the island pick-ups and transfers are available either from the hotel or from the nearest meeting point such as main squares, parking lots and streets (where large buses can pass).
If your hotel is located on a mountain or there are no wide entrances or turning areas suitable for large tour buses, the driver will try to get as close as possible. In this case, it is likely that you will have to walk 150-500 meters to the bus.
Please note that door-to-door transfers are not available for all hotels, appartments and villas because large tour buses can only access the most developed tourist areas with suitable roads. From some areas we can pick you up by minibus or car. In almost 95% in the case of group tours and 100% in the case of private tours, we can pick you up from the nearest meeting point in most popular cities and towns or directly from your hotel.
Be careful when placing your order
We are not responsible for any inconveniences (postponements, cancellations, etc.) that may occur due to initial mistakes in ordering the tours. For example, if you are staying in the town of Ammoudara (eastern part of the island, near the town of Agios Nikolaos), but you choose the trip from the town of Ammoudara in the region of Heraklion (central part of the island, near the capital). The name is the same, but there are 80 kilometers between these resorts! Another example is if you want to go on an excursion to Knossos Palace, Lassithi Plateau and Zeus Cave, but ordered its shortened version – only to Lassithi Plateau and Zeus Cave (so without visiting Knossos Palace). Sounds similar, but in fact these tours differ in itinerary, duration and content by almost half!
